Lake Powell for the 4th: Pontoon Days, Starry Nights, and an All-American RV Adventure

After two awe-inspiring weeks of stargazing at Grand Canyon’s annual Star Party, HoH founders Cristy Lee and Colan are switching from telescopes to pontoons. This 4th of July, we’re heading to Lake Powell—Arizona’s favorite water playground—for a celebration of freedom, fireworks, and floating fun. And yes, the HoH RV will be parked in prime real estate at Roam America.

Why Lake Powell? Simple. It’s the perfect mix of untamed wilderness and patriotic celebration. Located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, this red rock paradise offers more than just water sports and sandstone canyons (although we’ll be enjoying plenty of both). It’s a summer hotspot for RVers, boaters, hikers, and anyone who believes the best way to celebrate independence is on a pontoon in a swimsuit.

Things to Do in Lake Powell Over the 4th

1. Cruise the Canyons by Pontoon

With over 2,000 miles of shoreline, Lake Powell is perfect for pontoon days. Imagine hidden coves, warm water, and red rock cliffs that seem made for cannonballs and floating coolers. Whether you rent or bring your own boat, nothing beats a relaxed July 4th afternoon drifting with friends and family.

2. Explore Antelope Canyon (by Water or Land)

You’ve seen the photos—now see it for yourself. Kayak tours and slot canyon hikes around nearby Page let you explore one of the Southwest’s most photographed natural wonders without the crowds.

3. Attend the Page Independence Day Festival

This year’s celebration kicks off on July 4th at 10 a.m. in Page’s Town Park with a patriotic parade, live music, food trucks, and a fireworks show over Lake Powell that’s worth sticking around for. Full event details are available at the City of Page website.

4. Get Off-Road in Glen Canyon

Bring your toys, including UTVs, dirt bikes, and 4x4s, as they are welcome in designated areas of Glen Canyon Recreation Area. Please note that permits are required for certain trails. Check the NPS site before you roll.

5. Stargaze in True Dark Sky Country

Even after Grand Canyon’s Star Party, the night skies over Lake Powell continue to impress. With very little light pollution, the Milky Way offers a stunning display every night. Just grab a camp chair and look up. Don't forget your camera.

Don’t Forget the Essentials

Final Word from the Road

The 4th of July is more than fireworks and flags. It’s about choosing freedom, on the road, on the lake, and in your RV. Whether you’re boondocking solo or anchoring next to us on the pontoon, we hope this Independence Day gives you room to roam and reasons to smile.

We’ll see you at the lake.

House of Highways

At House of Highways, we’re more than just RV enthusiasts—we’re Colan and Cristy Lee McGeehan, two full-time nomads living the American road dream. After trading in the four walls of our home for four wheels, we quickly realized there was something missing: a one-stop platform for RVers and nomads like us. We saw the need to "Googlify" the nomadic lifestyle, making it easier for fellow road warriors to find the best places, perks, and experiences across the country.
